The engineers at Arup worked together with designers OMA/AMO to develop steel exhibition walls for the permanent collection at Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. The freestanding walls create a unique open route throughout the space in which the visitors create their own unique experience. Karamba3D was utilized in the design process to provide an interactive setup where the designers could adjust the dimensions of the walls and receive real time feedback about their structural performance.
Each of the uniquely shaped walls was generated in a parametric model in which the stresses and deformations were thoroughly analyzed. The walls themselves are built from steel sheets and connected by bolts. It was vital to minimize movement and vibration in the case of any visitor accidentally coming into contact with the walls. Stiffening proved to be beneficial for the overall stability of the walls. The positions of these plates were optimized using genetic algorithms in combination with Karamba3D.
